In response to Mumbai’s housing crisis, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the administration to establish a robust mechanism for affordable rental housing. Fadnavis highlighted the need for such options due to the increasing population influx into Mumbai for work and business. He emphasized the importance of a demand-supply based system to ensure citizens can access housing within their budget.
To enhance the enforcement of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, Chief Minister Fadnavis issued directives focusing on empowering authorities, scalability, formal notification, legal redressal acceleration, special courts, evening courts, and infrastructure. He proposed appointing Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) as competent authorities under the Act and establishing 100 Special Courts to address pending rent-related judicial matters, with retired judges presiding over them.
Fadnavis also mentioned the initiation of “Evening Courts” to expedite long-pending cases with the court’s approval. In cases where dedicated space is lacking, the state government will secure premises on a lease basis to ensure immediate operations.
