The Maharashtra Congress has decided to set up an inquiry committee to investigate the party’s defeat in the Chandrapur municipal corporation elections. Despite being the largest party, they lost the Mayoral election to the BJP. The state unit’s political affairs committee met in Mumbai to address this issue.
During the meeting, it was agreed that the committee would look into the reasons behind the loss, including possible internal conflicts within the local leadership. A senior party leader mentioned that the report from this inquiry would be presented to the All India Congress Committee. Maharashtra Congress in-charge, Ramesh Chennithala, downplayed the controversy during a press conference following the meeting.
Chennithala clarified that discussions were held with the MVA ally Shiv Sena – UBT to support Congress for the Mayor’s post in Chandrapur. However, at the last moment, Shiv Sena-UBT backed the BJP. He emphasized that there were no internal disputes within the Congress in Chandrapur. The infighting between Congress leaders had resulted in separate factions among the elected corporators.
Despite efforts from the state leadership to reconcile the differences, the infighting persisted. This led to a situation where the BJP secured the Mayor’s position with the support of Shiv Sena-UBT. Chennithala also announced that the party plans to organize protests against the Mahayuti government on various issues, including farmers’ concerns and law enforcement challenges.
