Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) National President Sunetra Pawar has stepped down from her position as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha. Pawar submitted her resignation letter to the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, C P Radhakrishnan. This move follows her recent victory in the Baramati Assembly by-election, where she shifted from the Upper House of Parliament to the State Legislature.
Office of the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan confirmed that Sunetra Pawar met with Vice President Shri C P Radhakrishnan at Uprashtrapati Bhawan to tender her resignation as a Member of Parliament. Her resignation, effective from May 6, 2026, was accepted by the Chairman who extended his best wishes for her future endeavors as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
As per parliamentary regulations, an individual holding seats in both a State Legislature and Parliament must resign from one within 14 days. Following the official announcement of the assembly by-election results on May 4, Sunetra Pawar promptly vacated her Rajya Sabha seat. A by-election is expected to be announced soon to fill this vacant position, generating significant interest within the NCP and the broader political landscape.
Sunetra Pawar assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister after the sudden passing of veteran leader Ajit Pawar. Her transition to the state Assembly was solidified by her remarkable performance in the Baramati bypolls, where she secured a record-breaking 2,18,930 votes. This landslide victory surpassed the previous voting record set by Ajit Pawar in 2019. The Pawar family’s representation in the Rajya Sabha remains strong, with Sunetra’s son Parth Pawar recently being sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP.
“I am deeply grateful to the people of Baramati for their overwhelming trust and support,” expressed Sunetra Pawar, dedicating her win to the memory of Ajit Pawar. Her triumph is viewed as a significant achievement for the NCP, with party members and her sons, Parth and Jay Pawar, celebrating the historic margin. The focus now shifts to the Election Commission for the announcement of the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-poll.
