Maharashtra FDA Minister, Narhari Zirwal, assured the state Assembly that there are no intentions to privatize the historic Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation. This assurance came in response to queries raised by Congress MLA Jyoti Gaikwad. Concerns over the institute’s current stagnation were voiced by senior legislators during the discussion, prompting Minister Zirwal to announce a comprehensive government-backed revival plan.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will lead a meeting with key stakeholders to address immediate development obstacles, as confirmed by Minister Zirwal. Additionally, a full-time IAS officer will be appointed as the Managing Director to enhance administrative efficiency. The high-powered Dr R.A. Mashelkar Committee’s comprehensive restructuring report, along with a funding proposal of Rs 150 crore, is set to be presented before the House after rectifying administrative issues.
Despite its prestigious history as a leading vaccine manufacturer, Haffkine ceased DPT vaccine production in 2007 due to outdated facilities. To revitalize operations, the Mashelkar Committee proposed a Rs 1,100-crore master plan for modern infrastructure development. The State is expected to contribute Rs 100 crore, with the Central Government funding the remainder for critical projects like IPV, Pentavalent vaccine, and bio-engineered blood clotting factors.
