The Maharashtra government is considering withdrawing the suspension of M Devender Singh, a 2011-batch IAS officer and Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). This decision follows discussions in the Legislative Assembly involving senior ministers and the Chief Minister. The controversy arose from concerns over rising pollution levels in Chandrapur district.
Environment Minister Pankaja Munde informed the Assembly that despite the environmental crisis, key MPCB officials had been absent from crucial review meetings. Minister Munde specifically pointed out that M Devender Singh failed to attend a mandatory briefing despite direct orders. In response, Presiding Officer Dilip Lande had promptly suspended Singh and Joint Director Satish Padwal.
During the recent budget session, BJP leader Chandrakant Patil raised the issue in the Assembly, revealing that Devender Singh had provided evidence for his absence and expressed regret. In light of this, the Speaker suggested the government consider lifting the suspension. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured appropriate action would be taken, hinting at a possible reversal of the disciplinary action.
The initial suspension stemmed from a lack of communication during an important briefing on Chandrapur’s environment. However, Singh’s apology and the intervention of senior leaders indicate a potential reinstatement for both Devender Singh and Satish Padwal.
