Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has assured the State Legislative Council of taking strict action against those responsible for environmental degradation in Mahabaleshwar and Matheran. He emphasized that the government will prevent the conversion of lands in these areas to ‘Freehold’ status. The state government is addressing illegal decisions related to leasing government lands in ecologically sensitive zones of Pune and Konkan divisions, along with unauthorized constructions violating lease conditions.
An investigative committee, led by Konkan Divisional Commissioner Rubal Agarwal, will delve into the matter, with an action taken report to be presented in the upcoming Assembly session. Minister Bawankule highlighted a controversial decision on February 8, 2022, where leased land parcels in Mahabaleshwar were converted to ‘Class-1’ (Freehold), sparking concerns of unchecked construction. Despite opposition, this decision was later revoked following government intervention.
Regarding the case, some individuals have obtained a stay order from the High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for August 4. Minister Bawankule affirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding these lands from private ownership. He mentioned the historical allocation of plots and lands in Matheran since the British era, stressing the need to address lease violations and environmental damage in a comprehensive inspection within the next three months.
During discussions, Bharatiya Janata Party MLC Pravin Darekar criticized the state administration for allowing illegal activities in Mahabaleshwar and Matheran. He called for stringent action against responsible officials. In contrast, Nationalist Congress Party MLC Aniket Tatkare advocated for a balanced approach, emphasizing the importance of preserving local livelihoods dependent on tourism while dealing with violators.
