Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed plans to establish a joint legislative committee comprising women lawmakers from both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. This committee aims to assess existing laws and safety protocols in corporate settings, particularly for women. The state government intends to implement any recommendations made by the panel to enhance workplace safety for women.
The decision follows discussions prompted by Council Member Chitra Wagh, who raised concerns about harassment of female employees in Nashik. Notable legislators like Neelam Gorhe and Manisha Kayande have also participated in the deliberations. Chief Minister Fadnavis provided updates on ongoing investigations, indicating that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has made significant progress, resulting in the filing of nine FIRs based on specific complaints.
Fadnavis clarified that the allegations involve individual employees engaging in targeted harassment and coercion for religious conversion. The SIT did not find any institutional involvement, and the company in question has pledged full cooperation in implementing necessary safety measures. The Chief Minister emphasized the need to avoid generalizing the actions of a few individuals to tarnish the reputation of an entire organization, particularly a leading Indian IT company.
Assurances were given by CM Fadnavis regarding prompt action on other workplace safety complaints raised during the session. An immediate investigation will be conducted into a complaint lodged by legislator Manisha Kayande concerning issues at a Government ITI in Solapur. Additionally, a thorough inquiry has been initiated into a complaint against a foreign multinational near Pune, with a strict 15-day deadline set for taking action against any wrongdoers.
The legislative initiative represents a significant development following a well-publicized controversy in Nashik in April and May 2026. The case gained national attention after a Fact-Finding Committee from the National Commission for Women (NCW) uncovered a toxic workplace culture. The NCW’s report highlighted serious violations of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, internal complaint mechanism failures, and an atmosphere of intimidation.
The Nashik Police’s SIT has filed a chargesheet against key accused individuals, including team leaders and an HR executive. The upcoming legislative committee will focus on strengthening multinational operational guidelines to prevent similar systemic breakdowns in the future.
