Maharashtra’s Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced plans to implement new regulations statewide to crack down on illegal minor mineral excavation. These regulations will complement existing measures such as Electronic Total Station surveys, drone surveillance, and legal amendments. The government’s commitment to addressing this issue was emphasized during a discussion in the Legislative Assembly.
In response to a mining case in Virar, Palghar district, Minister Bawankule mentioned that circle officers had inspected the site following complaints. Regarding the ensuing murder, he reported that eight out of nine suspects have been apprehended, with severe legal actions taken. Orders have been issued to shut down the mine and stone crusher unit based on a case filed with the State Human Rights Commission.
To combat persistent illegal mining, a state-wide Electronic Total Station survey will be conducted. A high-tech war room, in collaboration with RailTel Corporation, will monitor excavation activities round-the-clock. Sensitive areas like Raigad, Palghar, and Thane will be prioritized, with plans to extend surveillance to other districts in the future.
A committee will be formed to propose amendments to minor mineral rules and laws, with revised regulations expected to be presented in the upcoming legislative session. The government’s focus is on curbing illegal mineral excavation, preventing revenue losses, and ensuring transparent governance.
