In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans for a new Government Resolution to enhance the enforcement of the existing ban on non-biodegradable plastic flowers. This resolution aims to crack down on the production and sale of such flowers, as well as take action against decorators and venues using them. The move comes in response to concerns raised by legislators about the impact of plastic flowers on farmers and the environment.
During a legislative discussion, BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute highlighted the farming community’s demand for a complete ban on artificial and plastic flowers due to their increasing use. NCP MLA Jayant Patil also expressed worries over the rising sale and utilization of plastic flowers, which have affected farmers investing in natural floriculture. Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized the need for stricter measures against non-biodegradable plastic flowers, citing environmental harm and losses to natural flower cultivators.
Moreover, BJP MLA Pravin Datke pointed out the weak enforcement of the plastic ban in various local bodies despite existing regulations. He urged for clear guidelines in the new Government Resolution to hold officials accountable for enforcing the ban effectively. Environment Minister Pankaja Munde shared enforcement data, revealing thousands of cases of plastic ban violations and significant penalties collected by the government over the past few years.
In a separate issue, MLA Jayant Patil raised concerns about the removal of flower vendors from the Dadar market in Mumbai, leading to protests by the Mumbai Flower Vendors Association. He called for government intervention to address the situation. Chief Minister Fadnavis assured that he would investigate the matter and work towards a resolution to end the protest.
