Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Maharashtra has secured the top rank in NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024, surpassing Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The state’s performance, from policy to exports, is leading India’s growth trajectory. Maharashtra achieved an overall score of 68.01, the highest in the country, with total exports reaching Rs 5.63 lakh crore in FY24, and has been recognized as a ‘Leader’ state.
Fadnavis highlighted Maharashtra’s strong performance in key sectors like gems and jewellery, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals, contributing significantly to India’s exports. The state’s infrastructure is supported by 50 operational ports and 13 air cargo terminals, reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for enhancing the industrial and business ecosystem.
BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, emphasized the importance of states and districts in shaping India’s export trajectory. He stressed the need to strengthen export infrastructure, enhance cost competitiveness, establish robust institutions, and maintain transparent policy environments. Subnational export readiness is crucial for sustainable growth, job creation, reducing regional disparities, and integrating into global value chains amid global uncertainties.
Dr. Arvind Virmani, a NITI Aayog Member, underscored the role of states and Union Territories in sustaining and expanding this momentum. He emphasized the significance of identifying strengths, addressing structural gaps, and developing strategies to capitalize on new trade opportunities. The focus remains on delivering quality products to enhance competitiveness, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision.
The 2024 edition of the Export Preparedness Index incorporates new dimensions like macroeconomic stability, cost competitiveness, human capital, financial access, and the MSME ecosystem. Existing indicators have been refined to improve precision and policy relevance, aiming to strengthen India’s export landscape.
