The Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, pivotal for the Mahayuti alliance’s victory, is undergoing significant changes. The scheme, initially broad-based, is now more targeted due to fiscal constraints. The state government has reduced beneficiaries from 2.43-2.46 crore to 1.66-1.70 crore, leading to debates between political parties.
The verification process eliminated around 73-80 lakh women from the scheme. Many were excluded for not updating records by the deadline. Additionally, 12 lakh women exceeded the income limit, and some government employees were identified. The scheme also removed beneficiaries with four-wheelers or dual benefits from other programs.
The government has halted new enrollments and extensions, capping the beneficiary count. Officials affirmed the scheme’s continuity, but opposition demands an audit. The Ladki Bahin Yojana’s future, with a yearly cost of Rs 36,000 crore, balances political and financial concerns. The state aims to integrate it with existing schemes to manage costs effectively.
The transition faces challenges as grassroots workers report discontent among excluded women. The Opposition criticizes the government for pre-verification fund distribution and lack of accountability. The government may safeguard current beneficiaries but could face constraints in capital spending and infrastructure development.
