Reuben Gauci, the High Commissioner of Malta to India, also overseeing Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and serving as Malta’s Ambassador to Nepal, has raised worries about the political unrest in Bangladesh. He emphasized the potential impact on regional stability and the significant Bangladeshi community in Malta. Gauci highlighted that the situation in Bangladesh has been a longstanding issue, expressing hope for smooth elections on February 3.
The High Commissioner underscored the importance of stability in Bangladesh due to the presence of a sizable Bangladeshi expatriate community in Malta. He noted that the concern extends beyond Malta to India and globally, given the neighboring countries’ interests. Gauci also mentioned Malta’s involvement in humanitarian efforts in Bangladesh, particularly concerning the Rohingya crisis and collaborations with international organizations like the World Food Programme.
Reflecting on his time in India, Gauci commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the country’s economic progress. He praised PM Modi’s vision for India’s economic growth, acknowledging the country’s advancement in global rankings. Gauci also lauded India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, for his competence and diplomatic skills.
