The electoral process in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is facing scrutiny due to widespread allegations of Pakistan’s military attempting to influence and manipulate the polls. Residents fear continued interference, as the military has a history of shaping political outcomes in PoK. An official mentioned that the military is likely to favor the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to retain power in PoK.

The Awami Action Committee (AAC) has urged a boycott of the elections, labeling the entire process as a sham orchestrated by the military. Despite the administration’s assurances of fair elections, the Opposition and AAC question the credibility of the electoral process. The AAC has called for people to refrain from voting, citing concerns of rigging.

Observers highlight the importance of the first phase of elections in PoK, as it is expected to set the tone for the rest of the polling process. They emphasize that voter turnout will reflect public confidence in the electoral system. The ongoing protests in PoK have showcased widespread discontent, with experts noting a significant portion of the population expressing frustration with the establishment.

The first phase of polling in PoK, involving over 1.4 million registered voters across 13 Assembly constituencies, is scheduled for Monday. Major parties like the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) are participating. The electoral process has been criticized as a mere formality, with claims that the military has already predetermined the outcome.
