Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to travel to New Delhi on July 27 to participate in a movement organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against the NEET exam paper leak. Concurrently, she has appointed Saugata Roy, a four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member from Dum Dum constituency, as the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha.
Saugata Roy replaces Satabdi Roy, a four-time Lok Sabha member from Birbhum constituency and an actress-turned-politician, who recently switched to the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) along with 19 other former Trinamool Congress parliamentarians after the West Bengal polls. Following this shift, the Trinamool Congress now has only eight members in the Lok Sabha.
During the Trinamool Congress’s Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, Mamata Banerjee expressed support for the CJP-led movement in New Delhi and pledged to join the protest soon. It remains uncertain whether her participation will be symbolic or active at the sit-in demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Additionally, it is unclear if her involvement in the movement will be her sole agenda in the capital or if she will engage in discussions with various opposition party leaders, particularly from the Congress.
Mamata Banerjee had urged all opposition parties on July 21 to come together under the INDIA (Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance) bloc to collectively organize nationwide campaigns against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
