Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty clinched the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role as Kodumon Potti in ‘Bramayugam,’ marking his fourth win in this category. This achievement places him alongside Amitabh Bachchan as the only actors to have secured the prestigious award four times.
This recognition ends a 28-year gap since Mammootty’s last National Award for Best Actor in 1998. Critics widely praise his performance in ‘Bramayugam,’ considering it as one of the most deserving honors in his illustrious career. The 74-year-old actor received the news of his win while in Chennai.
With a career spanning over five decades and more than 400 films, Mammootty’s journey reflects remarkable perseverance. Despite debuting in 1971, he had to wait until 1980 for his first credited role. By the late 1980s, he had solidified his position as one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile and reliable actors.
‘Bramayugam,’ released on February 15, 2024, garnered acclaim for its performances, cinematography, music, and production design. The film, a rare black-and-white period horror drama, also achieved commercial success as one of the top-grossing Malayalam movies of the year. Mammootty had previously won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the same role, marking his seventh State Best Actor accolade.
The international recognition of ‘Bramayugam’ soared when it was chosen for a special screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles earlier this year. This selection marked the first time a film starring Mammootty was showcased at the prestigious museum, expanding his global audience reach.
This National Award adds to Mammootty’s exceptional year, following his Padma Bhushan honor earlier in recognition of his significant contributions to Indian cinema. Beyond a personal achievement, this award celebrates an actor who has continuously reinvented himself over generations, showcasing his enduring talent and commitment to excellence.
