Another case of sexual harassment involving a teenager in Kolkata came to light as a man was arrested for reportedly showing an explicit video to his friend’s minor daughter in an empty house. The police have taken action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and have initiated an investigation into the matter.
The victim, a 16-year-old girl residing with her parents in a rented house in the SS Township area of Sarshuna in southern Kolkata, allegedly faced harassment from the accused, who is the owner of the house. Despite being acquainted with the girl’s family, the accused allegedly took advantage of moments when the girl was alone in the house to exhibit obscene videos and sexually harass her.
Upon discovering the incidents, the victim’s family lodged a formal complaint against the landlord at the Sarshuna police station. The accused, who was arrested, is undergoing questioning, and the police are delving into the circumstances surrounding the crime and the accused’s interactions with the tenants.
The police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and are exploring the motive behind his actions, his frequency of visits to the tenants’ residence, and any underlying issues. The arrested individual is scheduled to appear in court, where the police will seek custody for further interrogation. The girl’s statement has been recorded, reigniting concerns about the city’s law enforcement and the safety of young girls.
