The police have apprehended Mokuleshar Reza for cyber fraud involving the theft of around Rs 56 lakh from Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee’s bank account. The arrest was made by the Cyber Crime division of Kolkata Police in Assam’s Rangapani area.
The incident occurred in November 2025 when the accused, posing as a lawyer, manipulated the MP’s registrar number linked to the bank account. Subsequently, he gained control of the account and withdrew the funds, allegedly using the money to purchase a significant amount of gold.
Efforts are underway to recover the purchased gold, and the arrested individual is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday. Despite the bank having refunded the money to the MP a year ago, investigations led to the recent arrest, prompting the MP to question the disparity in treatment between an MP and a common citizen.
