A 44-year-old man, Karim Sipai, from Sarghatani Ghati in Kadi, Mehsana district, was apprehended by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch for masquerading as a Hindu widower on a matrimonial platform. Operating under the alias “Aditya Patel,” he targeted vulnerable widowed women, deceiving them with false tales and forged documents to swindle money and assets.
Sipai, posing as a childless widower, manipulated his victims by feigning a solitary life after his wife’s supposed demise. By fabricating Aadhaar, PAN, driving license, and passport papers, coupled with fake death certificates of his wife, he sought to legitimize his deceitful persona. Exploiting the trust he built, he would promise marriage to the victims and then extract cash and valuables through various means.
One victim reported losing Rs 70,000 and a two-wheeler in the scam. The fraudster’s ruse unraveled when a suspicious caller ID name emerged during a phone call, exposing his false address. Further scrutiny confirmed that the man known as “Aditya Patel” was indeed Karim Sipai, a married man with two children, residing in Kadi.
Authorities suspect that multiple women fell prey to Sipai’s fraudulent tactics and are investigating the extent of his deception. They advise caution to individuals using matrimonial websites and social media, emphasizing the importance of verifying identities and documents before engaging in personal or financial commitments.
