A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault incident on the Silchar Bypass in Assam’s Cachar district. The arrested individual, Nilotpal Das, a resident of Tapoban Nagar in Silchar, was identified by the victim from a photograph and taken into custody. While the accused admitted to being present at the scene, he denied involvement in the assault, stating that he and others targeted couples in parked vehicles for extortion purposes.
Police investigations revealed that Rs 10,000 was transferred via UPI during the incident. The probe is exploring various angles, including extortion and sexual assault allegations. The case originated from a complaint alleging that seven men sexually assaulted a woman on February 19, while holding her partner hostage at knifepoint on the Silchar Bypass.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Cachar, Partha Pratim Das, confirmed the registration of a case and the arrest of one suspect. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend another individual involved. The SSP emphasized a comprehensive investigation into the case, encompassing extortion, rape, and other potential aspects, urging the public to remain calm pending the completion of the inquiry.
Awaiting the final medical report from Silchar Medical College and Hospital, the police will issue an official statement upon concluding the investigation. Social media platforms witnessed a surge in posts seeking justice for the victim following the incident, accompanied by various claims and interpretations. Cachar Police cautioned against sharing unverified information, highlighting the risks of misinformation and panic due to premature conclusions.
