In a significant ruling, a special fast-track court in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, has handed a man a life sentence for a series of crimes committed in 2017. The convict, Dilip, was found guilty of luring passengers into his vehicle, robbing them at gunpoint, attempting to rape a young woman, and fatally shooting her brother who tried to stop the assault. The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Vijay Kumar Singh, convicted Dilip under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
The incident took place on May 3, 2017, when 19-year-old Chandrashekhar and his cousin sister Khushboo accepted a ride from Dilip at the Kosi Kalan bus stand. Initially claiming to be heading towards Deeg, Dilip later diverted the vehicle towards Govardhan route under false pretenses. After stopping in a forested area between Jachonda and Junsuti villages, Dilip brandished a pistol, robbed the passengers, and attempted to sexually assault Khushboo.
Dilip’s criminal actions escalated when Chandrashekhar intervened to protect his sister. A scuffle ensued, leading to Dilip fatally shooting Chandrashekhar in the head before fleeing with the stolen valuables. Following his arrest near Govardhan Mod, police recovered part of the stolen money and the firearm used in the crime. Eyewitness testimonies, forensic evidence, and the FSL report were crucial in securing Dilip’s conviction.
The court sentenced Dilip to life imprisonment under Section 302 IPC for murder, along with fines, and also convicted him under other sections for attempted rape, robbery, possession of stolen property, and illegal weapon possession. The court ordered Dilip’s immediate transfer to Mathura district jail after adjusting the time spent in judicial custody against his sentence.
