Manchester United has decided to dismiss head coach Ruben Amorim following a 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road. The team’s lackluster performance under the Portuguese coach led to this decision. Ex-player Darren Fletcher is set to take over as interim coach of the club.
The club stated that the change was necessary to enhance their position in the league standings. Ruben Amorim, who took charge in November 2024 and guided the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May, is no longer with Manchester United. The club, currently sixth in the Premier League, hopes this change will boost their chances of achieving a higher league finish.
Darren Fletcher, a former player for United from 2002 to 2015, will lead the team in the upcoming match against Burnley. Fletcher, who has been involved in coaching roles at the club post-retirement, including coaching the U-18 team, was also part of the first-team staff under Ole Gunnar Solskjær in 2021. He has a decorated playing career with five league titles under Sir Alex Ferguson and was part of the 2008 Champions League-winning squad.
Amorim, known for his successful tenure at Sporting, faced difficulties implementing his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation at Manchester United. Despite challenges, he persisted with this tactic. While there were signs of improvement during the season, Amorim struggled to demonstrate a clear strategic direction, leading to consistent setbacks for Manchester United. Notably, the team dropped points at home against a Wolves side with only two points at that time.
After the draw against Leeds, Amorim expressed his authority as the manager of the Red Devils, contradicting the club’s official reference to him as the head coach. He also seemed to criticize the leadership at Old Trafford.
