Mangaluru International Airport has completed the installation of the Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) Category I system for Runway 24 after receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This achievement makes it the second airport in Asia and part of a select global group with such advanced infrastructure. The PAL Category I system enhances operational safety and landing precision, especially in low visibility conditions at the airport.
The airport, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), has demonstrated its commitment to safe and efficient aircraft operations with this new system. By adopting advanced technologies like the PAL system, the airport aims to improve aviation safety and boost passenger confidence. This project is a unique and pioneering airfield lighting installation in India, featuring Airfield Lighting Intelligent Management Systems (ALIMS) on towers extending 900m from the runway threshold.
The PAL system, which includes towers taller than the Qutub Minar, was executed with a flawless safety record, showcasing the airport’s dedication to high safety standards. This lighting system complements the airport’s ongoing airside enhancements, such as upgrades in runway lighting and safety infrastructure, aligning with its goal of becoming one of India’s safest tabletop airports.
