Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed concern over the impact of ethnic violence in the state, stating that many individuals still cannot return to their homes. He distributed Rs 1 lakh each to 26 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Lamboikhongnangkhong Relief Camp in Imphal for urgent medical needs. These IDPs are grappling with severe health issues like kidney diseases and cancer.
During a program at the Manipur Trade Expo Centre Relief Camp, Khemchand Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting violence-affected IDPs. He highlighted the special financial aid being provided to IDPs with chronic illnesses to ensure they receive necessary medical care without added financial burden. The Chief Minister assured ongoing support for displaced families facing challenges due to the prolonged displacement.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister underscored that the financial aid distribution is part of continuous government assistance to IDPs, particularly those with chronic ailments. He emphasized the importance of alleviating the suffering of IDPs unable to return home. Additionally, Rajya Sabha member Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi announced plans to provide support for women at the relief camp to enhance their economic self-reliance through initiatives like weaving machines.
The distribution event was attended by various dignitaries including MLA Sanasam Premchandra Singh, Imphal West Deputy Commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, and a significant number of Internally Displaced Persons. Following ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023, approximately 60,000 individuals from both Imphal Valley and hill districts were displaced, with many still residing in relief camps. While some have returned home, the state government continues to support the rehabilitation of those in need.
