Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh revealed the government’s dedication to constructing a top-notch polo ground in Lamphelpat, Imphal West district. Speaking at the 2nd Dr Ksh. Chourjit Singh Inter-District Polo Tournament 2026’s conclusion at Mapal Kangjeibung, he highlighted Manipur’s historical connection with polo.
The Imphal Polo Ground, known as Mapal Kangjeibung, is recognized as one of the world’s oldest polo venues. Singh acknowledged that the current facility falls short of international standards required for hosting matches.
Singh affirmed the government’s pledge to establish a world-class polo ground on a designated 32-acre site in Lamphelpat. He assured a site visit the following day to discuss development plans with officials and the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association.
The tournament’s final match commenced with the Chief Minister’s ceremonial ball throw-in, featuring 10 competing teams, culminating in a face-off between X Polo Club and Chingkheihunba Polo Club. The event was graced by dignitaries, including family members of Dr Ksh. Chourjit Singh and MHRPA officials.
In a separate event, Singh participated in the 31st Martyrdom Anniversary observance of Saheed Madhumangal at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, honoring the state’s cultural heritage and identity rooted in Sagol Kangjei, the original form of modern polo.
