Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh introduced a new scheme in the state Budget for 2026-27 aimed at empowering women economically through Self Help Groups (SHGs). The scheme is expected to benefit approximately 3.5 lakh women in Manipur. Financial assistance will be provided to women beneficiaries over a three-year period, starting with Rs 10,000 each through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in the first year.
Singh, who also handles the finance portfolio, allocated Rs 350 crore for the scheme in the upcoming budget. Additionally, he presented the Supplementary Demands for Grants for the financial year 2025-26. The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s progress in various sectors, attributing it to improved law and order conditions and thanked the people of Manipur for their support in maintaining peace.
The Budget speech emphasized the state’s revenue growth, which increased from Rs 2,087 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 2,887 crore in 2026-27, marking a more than 38% rise in two years. The Chief Minister acknowledged the Government of India’s assistance, including a special package of Rs 2,198 crore for various purposes such as pre-paying high-interest loans and supporting the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by violence.
