Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla highlighted the cultural importance of polo in Manipur, the birthplace of Sagol Kangjei, the original form of modern polo. He emphasized the need to protect Manipuri Ponies and conserve historic polo grounds while inaugurating the 7th Manipur Women’s International Polo Tournament 2026 at Imphal Polo Ground.

Governor Bhalla praised the tournament for promoting women’s empowerment through sports, showcasing confidence, leadership, and excellence. The event, held at the historic Imphal Polo Ground, is a significant step towards preserving Manipur’s rich polo heritage.

The tournament, attended by dignitaries including First Lady Jyoti Bhalla and Major General Ravroop Singh, features teams from South Africa, Zambia, and Indian Polo Association. The Manipur International Polo Tournament is part of the traditional Manipur Sangai Festival, symbolizing a resurgence in polo activities after a hiatus due to ethnic conflicts.
