Marcelo Bielsa took responsibility for Uruguay’s World Cup elimination, acknowledging his failure to maximize the team’s potential. Uruguay, a two-time champion, was knocked out after a 1-0 loss to Spain, finishing third in Group H with two points from three games. Bielsa expressed regret, stating, “I couldn’t unify the individual talents into a cohesive team.”
The coach defended his decisions during the crucial match, including the substitution of captain Federico Valverde and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera’s halftime exit. Bielsa clarified that Valverde’s substitution aimed to enhance Uruguay’s attacking threat, seeking to create more goal-scoring opportunities.
Despite facing criticism, Bielsa emphasized Muslera’s qualities and character, highlighting the goalkeeper’s own request for the halftime change. Bielsa urged for fair judgment, stating, “He is a player of great character, and we should not be too harsh on him.”
Spain secured the group’s top spot with seven points, while Cape Verde claimed the second knockout position with three draws. Uruguay, with only two points, exited the tournament alongside Saudi Arabia. Baena’s goal in the 42nd minute sealed Uruguay’s fate, as the experienced Muslera failed to stop the shot.
