When India plays South Africa in the Men’s T20 World Cup Super Eights on February 22, Mariana Morkel will be torn between supporting her sons on opposing teams. Her elder son, Albie Morkel, is a consultant coach for South Africa, while her younger son, Morne Morkel, serves as India’s bowling coach.
Albie Morkel mentioned in a press conference that their mother is more concerned about choosing sides between India and South Africa. With South Africa advancing to the Super Eights, Morkel emphasized that the real challenge begins now, anticipating tough matches against teams like India, Australia, and the West Indies.
Morkel, who joined the Proteas as a consultant coach for the tournament, expressed confidence in the team’s experienced bowlers and strong batting lineup. He refrained from making bold predictions about South Africa’s performance, emphasizing the tough competition ahead in the World Cup.
The former all-rounder, drawing coaching inspiration from his IPL experience with Chennai Super Kings, highlighted the importance of not overwhelming players with technical advice during high-pressure tournaments. Morkel aims to support players, build their confidence, and learn from successful coaches like Stephen Fleming for a successful World Cup campaign.
