The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is organizing the National Seafood Skill Olympiad from July 1 to 3, 2026, to boost seafood exports. India, ranking first in shrimp exports and fifth globally in seafood exports, is expanding its production of value-added seafood products. The Olympiad, part of Seafood Expo Bharat (SEB) 2026, will showcase skilled professionals in preparing value-added seafood items.
MPEDA conducted 50 seafood value-addition training programs as a lead-up to the Olympiad. Over 2,500 seafood processing workers were trained in preparing marine products like breaded squid rings, stretched shrimp, and fish fillets. Preliminary skill competitions were held post-training, with top performers advancing to state-level and regional competitions.
The top 10 performers from regional contests will compete in the National Seafood Skill Olympiad grand finale. Winners will be awarded medals, certificates, and cash prizes. The initiative aims to enhance India’s reputation as a top seafood supplier by recognizing and promoting skilled professionals in the industry.
Nearly 5,000 stakeholders are expected to participate in Seafood Expo Bharat, engaging in business meetings and technical sessions. India’s seafood exports hit a record USD 8.45 billion in FY2025-26, with 670 approved seafood processing units contributing significantly. The government targets to increase the share of value-added seafood products in total exports to 25% by 2030.
