Residents of Delhi’s Vivek Vihar are haunted by a massive fire that erupted in a four-storey building early Sunday, claiming nine lives and causing injuries to several individuals. The blaze, which started on the building’s second floor around 4 a.m., prompted the dispatch of 14 fire engines to the scene. Over 10 people were rescued during the ensuing rescue efforts.
Witnesses described the fire as devastating, with one local mentioning that it originated on the second floor, trapping occupants before they could flee. Suspected to be a result of a short circuit, the fire raged for two hours before being contained by firefighters. Shahdara MLA Sanjay Goyal also visited the site, expressing sorrow over the tragic incident.
Local authorities reported that the bodies found in the building were badly charred, making identification challenging. The fire’s rapid spread from one floor to another hindered escape attempts, leading to the loss of multiple lives. Police, along with other emergency responders, swiftly arrived at the location to manage the situation and provide medical assistance to the injured.
DCP (Shahdara) Rajendra Prasad Meena disclosed that the fire was reported around 4 a.m., prompting a swift response from fire crews and law enforcement. The search and rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on locating any remaining individuals in need of assistance. Preliminary investigations have revealed that nine individuals perished in the blaze, while the cause of the fire remains under scrutiny.
