Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful emphasized the diverse partnership with India, highlighting India’s active role in funding and constructing various infrastructure projects in Mauritius. Ramful, also serving as the Minister for Regional Integration and International Trade, noted the expanding business connections between the two nations.
The collaboration between India and Mauritius spans multiple sectors, aiming at fostering a consistent socio-economic evolution encompassing infrastructure, education, technology, and healthcare. Ramful acknowledged India’s significant contributions to projects in Mauritius, which have been supported financially by the Indian government through grants and concessional credit lines.
Under the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Partnership Agreement, economic ties between Mauritius and India have strengthened, with trade amounting to around USD 887 million in recent years and showing a positive growth trend. Additionally, capital flows have surged, positioning Mauritius as the second-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India.
India’s support to the Global South was commended by Ramful, who described India as a reliable ally for Mauritius. He emphasized that the partnership between the two countries not only signifies bilateral success but also sets a model for the collective future of the Global South.
Ramful highlighted the shared interest of India and Mauritius in ensuring the safety and security of the Indian Ocean while upholding maritime laws. Collaborative efforts include joint maritime exercises with the Indian Navy and engagements through the MAHASAGAR Initiative and the Information Fusion Centre to enhance maritime security in the region.
