The MDMK has officially declared its decision to end its association with the DMK-led alliance, marking the conclusion of a nearly nine-year political collaboration. The announcement came following a meeting of the party’s General Council and high-level committee at its headquarters in Egmore, Chennai. Chaired by the party’s auditor, Arjunaraj, the meeting was attended by MDMK general secretary Vaiko and other senior leaders.
Party sources revealed that the leadership, after considering the party’s future political trajectory and differences with its ally, passed a resolution to withdraw from the DMK alliance. Reports suggest that Sirkazhi MLA M. Senthil Selvan, one of the two legislators elected on the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, is poised to join the DMK, as he was absent from the General Council meeting.
The MDMK had contested and won the Sirkazhi and Kadayanallur Assembly constituencies on the DMK’s symbol as part of the alliance. However, post-election discrepancies emerged regarding the party’s political stance and its position on the ruling TVK government. Sources indicated that Senthil Selvan disagreed with the leadership on various issues and is likely to retain his MLA position if he joins the DMK.
The General Council also approved a resolution criticizing the DMK for allegedly seeking ties with its historical rival, the AIADMK. The resolution condemned the DMK’s purported attempts to engage with the AIADMK, labeling it as politically inappropriate. The absence of Durai Vaiko from the meeting has sparked further conjecture about internal divisions within the party.
With the MDMK’s formal exit from the alliance, Tamil Nadu’s political opposition landscape is poised for a significant reshuffle in anticipation of forthcoming electoral contests.
