At least 11 individuals have succumbed to measles and related symptoms in Bangladesh, with the total number of confirmed and suspected deaths now standing at 409. The Directorate General of Health Services reported that within a 24-hour period, four deaths were confirmed as measles-related, bringing the total confirmed deaths since March 15 to 65. Additionally, seven more deaths associated with suspected cases were recorded, raising the total suspected deaths to 344, as per the Bangladeshi daily Dhaka Tribune.
During the same 24-hour timeframe, there were 1,503 suspected measles patients documented, contributing to a total of 49,159 cases since March 15. Among these, 205 cases were confirmed as measles, increasing the total confirmed cases to 6,819. Hospitals have admitted 34,909 patients exhibiting measles symptoms since March 15, indicating the severity of the outbreak.
The measles outbreak in Bangladesh, which has claimed over 400 lives since mid-March, has been described as an “avoidable disaster.” Criticism has been directed at the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which dismantled a functional vaccine procurement system without the ability to reconstruct it. The report emphasized the need for accountability and highlighted the detrimental impact of halting vaccine procurement and depleting medicine supplies to community clinics during the interim government’s tenure.
