Medical interns and students who took part in free health camps organized by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour constituency are set to be interrogated by state health department officials and CID investigators. The Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, disclosed that a joint probe by CID and the state police will be conducted to investigate reported irregularities in the Sebaashray health camps.
Authorities aim to determine whether the participants volunteered for the health camps or faced any pressure from higher-ups or political figures. Those found to have participated voluntarily may receive cautionary measures from the education department, while those coerced may face legal consequences. The state health department will also assess whether the interns and students worked independently or under qualified supervision during the camps.
Officials expressed concern over the potential risks to medical ethics if interns operated without proper supervision, emphasizing the need for accountability in sourcing medicines and equipment. The Chief Minister, during a recent assembly session, highlighted alleged cases of patients suffering severe consequences after treatment at the camps and cited claims of corruption and irregularities.
