A post-graduate medical student, Battula Deepika, was discovered dead in the Vijayawada Government General Hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Deepika, a final-year student in the Anaesthesia Department, was found in the hospital early in the morning. Authorities reported that she was on duty the previous evening and had requested food from a classmate due to hunger.
The police were alerted, and an investigation was initiated after Deepika’s body was found. CCTV footage was being reviewed by the police in collaboration with hospital staff to determine the cause of her death. Deepika had complained of abdominal pain and requested an injection from a junior medic before being found unresponsive in the operation theatre.
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav expressed shock at the incident and extended support to Deepika’s family. The minister instructed the police commissioner to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Deepika’s death. Hospital authorities are conducting an internal inquiry, with a committee established to oversee the investigation.
Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem examination report to shed light on the cause of Deepika’s death. The hospital superintendent mentioned that they are also probing the possibility of any harassment faced by Deepika. Statements from individuals, including the medic who administered the injection, are being recorded as part of the investigation.
