Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the importance of renewable energy while inaugurating a 50 KW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Shillong under the Chief Minister’s Solar Mission. Sangma highlighted the significance of clean and sustainable energy solutions in the face of climate change impacts on livelihoods.
The project, executed by the Meghalaya New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (MNREDA), stands as one of the largest solar installations in a state educational institution. Costing around Rs 50 lakh, the 50 KW system is equipped with battery backup to ensure uninterrupted power supply during adverse weather or power disruptions.
Sangma outlined the broader vision of the CM Solar Mission, focusing on comprehensive renewable energy solutions with battery storage and inverter support. With over 1.5 MW of solar capacity already installed in nearly 700 schools in Meghalaya, plans are underway to implement the same in another 1,300 schools soon.
The newly inaugurated system at St. Mary’s is projected to save nearly 6,000 units of electricity monthly, reducing the institution’s power expenses by about Rs 40,000 per month and close to Rs 5 lakh annually. Sangma also revealed plans to integrate such projects with net metering systems to supply excess electricity back to the grid for community benefit.
Sangma further announced a forthcoming technology and innovation competition by the Meghalaya government to inspire students and young entrepreneurs to develop practical solutions in various sectors, including energy, healthcare, waste management, and agriculture.
