Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed that the state government has presented a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Shillong for the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council. The memorandum highlighted four crucial concerns related to Meghalaya’s interests.
Sangma emphasized the need for measures to tackle illegal immigration, the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule, and apprehensions regarding potential changes to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The state government stressed the importance of implementing a robust mechanism to prevent illegal immigration into Meghalaya effectively.
The Meghalaya government also pressed for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution to preserve the state’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Sangma underscored the significance of providing institutional support for the promotion of these indigenous languages.
Furthermore, Sangma highlighted the necessity of amending the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which governs the administration of tribal areas in various northeastern states. He urged the Union government to ensure that any amendments are made after thorough consultations with all stakeholders to safeguard the interests of tribal communities across the Northeast adequately.
Regarding the proposed amendments to the FCRA, Sangma expressed concerns raised by several organizations about the potential impact on their operations and assets. Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded positively to Meghalaya’s concerns and invited a delegation from the state to New Delhi for detailed discussions. Sangma mentioned that the Home Minister requested the state government to submit written suggestions and recommendations on the proposed FCRA amendments for further review.
