Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, led a high-level meeting with the Education Department to evaluate the state’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) status and strategize education reforms. The meeting discussed various indicators contributing to the PGI framework, focusing on enhancing learning outcomes, school infrastructure, vocational education, and digital governance.
Sangma reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing educational outcomes and ensuring quality education access for all children in Meghalaya. With around 14,600 schools catering to about 30 lakh people, the state’s extensive educational outreach, especially in remote areas, was highlighted during the review. The meeting emphasized ‘Learning Outcomes’ as a key aspect within the PGI framework, with efforts underway to boost foundational literacy, numeracy, and classroom teaching standards.
The government is actively working on upgrading school infrastructure, including science labs, ICT facilities, smart classrooms, libraries, and more. District-level accountability was stressed, with Deputy Commissioners urged to collaborate closely with the Education Department for effective implementation of educational initiatives. Progress in vocational education, student welfare programs, and digital governance systems was also discussed.
Chief Minister Sangma instructed continuous monitoring of performance indicators and targeted interventions where needed, ensuring government support for schools to achieve tangible improvements. The review highlighted advancements in digital governance, educational data systems, and the school rationalization program, which has already merged or consolidated over 3,000 schools for better resource allocation and service delivery.
Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to long-term educational reforms, emphasizing the importance of quality learning outcomes across all institutions. He stressed the need for a strategic, data-driven approach to reforms, backed by regular assessments and evidence-based interventions. The Chief Minister underscored the significance of coordination between schools, districts, and the state government for effective educational progress.
