Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed the state legislative Assembly that 817 localities and 427 sub-localities in Meghalaya have been registered under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016. The registration process is ongoing as per Sangma’s update. The Act’s primary aim of registering and monitoring individuals entering the state will continue as planned.
Tracing the Act’s development, Sangma mentioned that steps were taken to operationalize the MRSSA after his government took office in 2018. Despite facing setbacks due to the Meghalaya High Court’s decision to strike down certain provisions, the government remains dedicated to achieving the Act’s objectives. With over 7,000 listed villages in Meghalaya, the task of registration and monitoring poses a significant administrative challenge.
Sangma emphasized the need for collective effort in successfully implementing the Act, urging all stakeholders, including local authorities and community leaders, to collaborate. He assured the Assembly that progress is steady in the areas already covered and that the registration drive will expand to other parts of the state gradually. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring residents’ and migrants’ safety, security, and orderly management through the MRSSA.
