Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has instructed officials to hasten the progress of ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects at Baghmara Civil Hospital in South Garo Hills. He emphasized the need for timely completion of these projects to ensure quality healthcare services for the district’s residents.
During a review session with senior Health and Family Welfare Department officials, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized close monitoring of all project components without any delays. He also directed the department to expedite the recruitment of specialist doctors and enhance the nursing and paramedical workforce to enhance healthcare delivery.
Government officials informed the Chief Minister that the hospital’s operation theatre, operational since 2025, has already conducted 85 surgeries, including 42 Caesarean sections. In 2025, the hospital catered to 20,108 outpatients and admitted 2,334 inpatients, with an additional 10,143 outpatients served in the first half of 2026, indicating a growing patient influx.
The hospital currently offers emergency obstetric care, Caesarean services, and runs a transit home for expectant mothers before delivery. Notably, four major infrastructure projects totaling around Rs 11.37 crore are either under implementation or in the tendering stage. These projects include the renovation of the old Community Health Centre building, construction of an overhead water tank, refurbishment of 25 residential quarters for medical staff, and the proposed Phase-II expansion for a 70-bedded hospital.
Chief Minister Sangma also reviewed plans for new healthcare facilities, such as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a blood bank, expansion of the transit home for pregnant women, and an integrated 50-bedded Mother and Child Health wing supported by the Centre’s public health infrastructure program. Additionally, he assessed the proposal to upgrade the Chokpot Community Health Centre into a First Referral Unit with comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care, a blood storage unit, a newborn stabilisation unit, and round-the-clock referral services. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that these investments lead to accessible, reliable, and high-quality healthcare services for the people of South Garo Hills.
