Shillong, Aug 3 (IANS) Hours after unidentified masked men hurled a petrol bomb at the office of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) in Shillong, the East Khasi Hills district administration on Monday assured that the culprits would face stringent legal action and appealed to the public not to spread rumours about the incident.

In an official statement, the administration said it had taken serious note of the attack at Lumpyngngad, where two masked individuals threw a petrol bomb towards the premises at around 12.10 p.m.

According to preliminary findings shared by the district police, the petrol bomb struck the outer wall of the building before the attackers fled the scene. No injuries or casualties were reported, while damage to the property was minimal, limited to slight discolouration of the exterior wall.

The administration said the East Khasi Hills Police have registered a criminal case and launched an intensive investigation to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.

Police teams are analysing forensic evidence and examining CCTV footage from the area.

Warning of strict action, the administration said any individual or group found to be involved, either directly or indirectly, would be dealt with in accordance with the law, adding that such incidents undermine public safety and the rule of law.

The district administration also urged citizens to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information related to the incident.

It appealed to anyone with relevant information or video footage to contact the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, assuring that the identity of informants would remain confidential.

The motive behind the petrol bomb attack remains under investigation, and police are yet to make any arrests.
