Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, Dr B.D.R. Tiwari, announced that the election for one Rajya Sabha seat in the state will take place on June 18, with vote counting on the same day. The official notification for the election is set to be issued on June 1, and the deadline for filing nominations is June 8.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on June 9, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11. Polling is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 18, followed by the counting of votes at 5 p.m. on the same day. The entire election process is expected to conclude before June 20.
Dr. Tiwari addressed the media after meeting with political party representatives, where detailed presentations were given on the election schedule, nomination procedures, voting methods, and legal requirements. Party representatives were informed about the submission of nomination papers, security deposits, and compliance with Supreme Court directives and Election Commission guidelines.
The election will be conducted through proportional representation using a single transferable vote system. Political parties were briefed on the open ballot voting procedure and the rules regarding the display of marked ballot papers. The incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, is set to vacate the Rajya Sabha seat in late June 2026, prompting the biennial election on June 18, 2026.
