Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar revealed that the state’s economy has almost doubled in the past seven years, showcasing the resilience of its people and the government’s long-term vision. During the Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, he disclosed that the state achieved a remarkable 9.66% real Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth in 2024-25, positioning it as the second fastest-growing state in India after Tamil Nadu.
The Governor emphasized that Meghalaya is the sole state to maintain an average growth of 10% for two consecutive years post the Covid pandemic, with the economy expanding from Rs 29,508 crore to Rs 59,626 crore in 2025. He outlined the state’s development agenda guided by Vision 2032, aiming to triple the economy from 2022 levels and rank Meghalaya among India’s top 10 states in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals.
Vijayashankar highlighted that the growth is propelled by sectors like agriculture, roads, power, water supply, investment promotion, IT, communications, and tourism, along with targeted social sector interventions in healthcare, education, livelihoods, and social security. He also mentioned the implementation of 15 externally aided projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore across various sectors, supported by multilateral agencies, to bolster infrastructure and investment in the state.
The Governor further noted that Meghalaya has attracted over Rs 1,800 crore in private investments and aims to mobilize more than Rs 8,000 crore by 2032, creating over 50,000 jobs. He highlighted governance reforms, digital platforms, and deregulation that have enhanced transparency and the ease of doing business. Additionally, he cited national recognition for Meghalaya’s community-driven climate resilience model and emphasized the importance of continued focus on infrastructure, power sector reforms, and sustainable development for inclusive growth and prosperity for all citizens.
