The Met Department has forecasted heavy rain in north Bengal districts, raising concerns about potential landslides in the hilly regions and the likelihood of rivers overflowing. Conversely, south Bengal districts are not expected to experience heavy rainfall at present.
According to a Met Department official, the depression over south Bengal districts is dissipating, reducing the chances of heavy rain. Instead, scattered light to moderate rain is anticipated to persist in the area. However, a different scenario is expected in north Bengal, where heavy rainfall is predicted, posing risks of river swelling and landslides. Specific rain warnings have been issued for the region.
In north Bengal, an orange alert has been issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri districts due to heavy rain predictions on Tuesday. The remaining districts have received a yellow alert for heavy rain. Furthermore, a red alert has been issued for five hill districts on Wednesday, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert for heavy rain has also been issued for North Dinajpur district.
The Met Department has cautioned about potential landslides in hill areas like Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Additionally, rivers such as Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, and Raidak may exceed the danger level in terms of water levels. There is a risk of flooding in low-lying areas and potential damage to crops.
Meanwhile, south Bengal is expected to have cloudy skies on Tuesday and Wednesday. A yellow alert has been issued for scattered light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in the south Bengal districts. Thunderstorm possibilities are set to rise in south Bengal, including Kolkata, starting Thursday.
The weather forecast indicates a likelihood of heavy rain on Friday in North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts. Thunderstorm alerts are in place for Saturday and Sunday in south Bengal districts. Kolkata is expected to experience increased chances of rain from Thursday onwards, with a yellow alert issued for thunderstorms and rain over the weekend.
On Monday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 29 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity ranging from 86 to 98 percent. The city received 3.7 millimetres of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
