Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed concerns regarding the controversial song ‘Sarka Chunar,’ emphasizing the need for filmmakers to exercise freedom of speech responsibly within societal norms. He highlighted that while freedom of speech is essential, it should be practiced in alignment with societal values and cultural standards. The minister’s remarks came in response to a query raised by SP MP Anand Bhadouria in the Lok Sabha.

The government, as stated by Vaishnaw, is dedicated to taking appropriate measures to safeguard vulnerable individuals, especially children, from the negative impacts of digital content. The song ‘Sarke Chunariya’ from the movie ‘KD: The Devil,’ featuring Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt, faced significant backlash due to its suggestive lyrics and choreography. Following widespread criticism, the song was banned and subsequently removed from YouTube.

In light of the controversy, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the song’s creators, citing concerns over objectionable content. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo expressed strong disapproval of the song’s content, labeling it as morally unacceptable and harmful to society. Complaints were lodged with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging legal action against the song’s explicit nature.
