Ethanol-blended petrol actually reduces carbon emissions from vehicles, with biogenic carbon molecules that do not add to environmental carbon levels.
Claims of insects being attracted to E20 fuel were refuted by BPCL, stating that the fuel-grade ethanol used in blending is insect-repellent. Additionally, concerns about reduced mileage, engine damage, or warranty issues due to E20 fuel usage were labeled as untrue. Studies have shown significant reductions in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions with E20, enhancing vehicle performance without adverse effects.
Scientific evidence supports the benefits of E20 fuel, including improved acceleration, reduced carbon emissions, and better anti-knocking properties. The Indian automobile industry has confirmed that warranty coverage for vehicles using E20 fuel will be honored. The Ministry clarified that ethanol production does not significantly impact water resources, as surplus agricultural produce is diverted for ethanol, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
The Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme has positively impacted Indian agriculture by ensuring timely payments to farmers, boosting farm incomes, and reducing financial stress in the sugar sector. The Government plans to assess the impact of 20% ethanol blending before considering any further enhancements.
