The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hosted the ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon on International Sun Day to honor ‘Saur Shakti’ illuminating the world. This event commemorated the achievement of over 1,50,000 MW of solar energy installed capacity and the significant progress made under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY). Notably, 30 lakh solar rooftop installations have been completed under this initiative, with a record 2.7 lakh installations in April 2026, benefiting more than 45 lakh households nationwide.
India’s cumulative solar capacity has reached 150 gigawatts as of March 31 this year, a remarkable increase from 2.82 GW in 2014, marking a 53-fold rise in twelve years. The country added the last 50 GW in just 15 months, the fastest growth in its history, with nearly half of India’s electricity now sourced from non-fossil fuel resources, surpassing the 2030 target. This achievement solidifies India’s position as a global leader in clean energy transition.
Ranked third globally for installed renewable energy capacity, India showcased its solar energy journey through the ‘Run for Sun’ event, aiming to expedite solar deployment nationwide. The event, which included 2 km and 5 km races at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, witnessed enthusiastic participation from individuals of all age groups, reflecting the increasing public engagement in India’s clean energy initiatives.
Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, highlighted that the ‘Run for Sun’ signifies a collective stride towards a sustainable and self-reliant India. He stressed the country’s commitment to expanding solar energy access through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, ensuring that the benefits of clean energy reach every household as India cements its global leadership in renewable energy.
