The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) unveiled the findings of the Expert Committee on Energy Statistics. The report focuses on key recommendations concerning biofuels’ contribution, addressing data gaps in demand and supply, particularly in captive power and electricity consumption by electric vehicles (EVs). The Expert Committee, led by IIT-Delhi Director Dr. Rangan Banerjee, emphasized the importance of aligning energy statistics with international standards for improved data collection and dissemination.
The Committee proposed the adoption of international standards to categorize energy statistics in line with global classifications like ISIC Rev. 5, NIC-2025, and SIEC. It also stressed the need for uniform conversion factors across Energy Ministries to ensure consistency in energy statistics. Additionally, the Committee suggested a methodology to refine sectoral end-use consumption data for imported and domestically auctioned coal, utilizing the ASI database.
Furthermore, the report recommended a similar approach to capture industry-wise electricity consumption data using the ASI database. Addressing data gaps, the Committee outlined a methodology to incorporate biofuel consumption data into India’s energy balance table, aiming to enhance the accuracy of energy statistics. The report also highlighted the need to address gaps in data related to electricity consumption by EVs and through captive/off-grid modes.
The Expert Committee’s recommendations aim to enhance the methodological robustness and analytical utility of India’s energy statistics system. By promoting evidence-based policymaking and improving data quality, these recommendations are expected to bolster monitoring of India’s energy landscape. Effective implementation will require collaborative efforts among Ministries and stakeholders to establish a reliable and internationally comparable energy statistics framework.
