A church in Pakistan’s Punjab province, the Tak Memorial Church in the village of Preme Nagar, was recently vandalized, with a cross broken and a Bible desecrated. The Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM) denounced this act as a deliberate effort to shame the Christian community amidst a series of attacks on religious minorities in the country.
The VOPM emphasized that such attacks not only target physical structures but also undermine the fundamental right to worship without fear. The desecration of a minority’s sacred book sends a strong message that their beliefs are disposable, impacting the coexistence of different faiths.
Local leaders and community members have strongly criticized the vandalism, labeling it a violation of religious respect, peace, and tolerance. The incident is seen as part of a broader pattern of intimidation, violence, and collective punishment faced by religious minorities in Pakistan, often incited by various triggers such as blasphemy allegations or extremist influences.
The VOPM urged Pakistani authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident, identify any potential supporters or instigators, and ensure transparent prosecution. They also called for proactive protection of churches and minority areas, along with accountability for those inciting religious hatred either online or in person.
