Former India captain Mithali Raj has recommended that India should consider moving captain Harmanpreet Kaur to number four following the team’s loss to South Africa in the Women’s T20 World Cup. Mithali expressed disappointment over India’s missed opportunity and highlighted left-arm spinner Shree Charani’s impactful performance that briefly shifted the game in India’s favor.
India, after posting 158 runs, seemed poised to solidify their position in Group A. However, Marizanne Kapp’s unbeaten 81 off 45 balls led South Africa to victory in the final over, marking India’s first defeat in the tournament and complicating their path to qualification.
Despite the defeat, Mithali praised Shree Charani’s disciplined bowling as a significant positive for India. The spinner’s strategic approach, including taking crucial wickets in a single over and maintaining tight lines, showcased her adaptability and contribution to the team’s performance.
Shree Charani’s breakthroughs momentarily halted South Africa’s progress, but Kapp’s aggressive play, coupled with missed opportunities by India, ultimately secured the win for the Proteas. This outcome leaves India in a challenging position, requiring victories in their upcoming matches against Bangladesh and Australia to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
